Ben Wilson has been painting these exquisite miniatures onto discarded blobs of chewing gum that pattern inner city streets for over 8 years now. A familiar figure, in high viz clothing, he lies on the pavement with a small box of acrylics, fine brushes, varnish and a blowtorch to create these mini masterpieces.
The clever trick is he can’t be prosecuted (tho mean minded Boroughs have tried) as the gum belongs to no-one; is no-ones property.
First he cleans the surface before painting pretty much what comes into his head on any given day. He’s normally very happy to fulfill an image request, a friend’s birthday greeting, a proposal of marriage even!
Next time you’re walking the streets, North London particularly, look out for them, around 2cm across they can be hard to spot but well worth the descent to ground level for closer inspection.
